Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City has won nine-straight games against Denver and is looking to keep that streak going this Sunday.

Led by reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes, the high-powered Chiefs offense is once again among the league’s best, and it is the strength of their team. The Chiefs rank third in the NFL in both scoring offense with 29.2 points per game and total offense with 417 yards per game, and they have not scored fewer than 23 points in any of their first six games.

Kansas City enters Sunday’s contest coming off a hard-fought 26-17 road win over Buffalo and currently sits atop the AFC West with a 5-1 record – the lone blemish coming from a 40-32 shootout loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in week five. So far this season, Kansas City has looked the part of a defending Super Bowl champion and seems primed for a run at a second-straight title.

Denver Broncos

After starting the season 0-3, the Broncos finally seem to be clicking, stringing together back-to-back wins against the Jets and the Patriots the past two weeks to enter this week’s matchup with the division leaders with a little momentum. To add to the optimism, the Broncos also returned starting quarterback Drew Lock last week from a shoulder injury he sustained against the Steelers in week two.

However, Lock’s return is just about the only good injury news for Denver. Linebacker Von Miller, cornerback A.J. Bouye and receiver Courtland Sutton are all on injured reserve and the Broncos also saw starting guard Dalton Risner, linebacker Josh Watson and receiver Diontae Spencer leave the game with injuries on Sunday. To top it all off, starting running back Melvin Gordon could be facing a three-game suspension from the NFL after he was cited for driving under the influence last week.

The Broncos certainly have a little momentum heading into Sunday’s matchup, it’s just a matter of if it will be enough to overcome quite a few injuries.

Outlook

The Chiefs are the better team and enter the game as heavy favorites for a reason, but there are a couple of factors that work in favor of the Broncos here. Kansas City is playing its second-straight road game on a short week right after a hard-fought game against Buffalo that had significant playoff seeding implications. To top it off, the Broncos will have a decided home-field advantage due to the high altitude in Denver.

It’s the perfect storm – the Chiefs will be facing a classic hangover spot on the road after a short week with the game played at an unfamiliar high altitude. Kansas City could win the game but covering such a large spread under the circumstances is just too great an ask. Take the Broncos and the points.

Pick: Denver Broncos +9.5
