What Is Serie A?

Football is an exciting sport, and there’s always more to discover. While Germany has the Bundesliga and Spain has La Liga, Italy has Serie A.

Serie A (Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A) is a top Italian football league that started with only 18 clubs but has now grown to 20.

At the top of Serie A’s winning history is Juventus FC, also known as Juve or the Old Lady. You’re probably thinking, why would Italy’s most successful football team be named after an old lady?

Many people believe that “old” refers to the club’s attitude to veteran players, focusing on their experience. Some say that as a pun, the club used Juventus, which means “youth” in Latin.

The “Lady” part of the nickname is a reference to how fans show affection to the club as if it were their significant other. More than 8 million fans supported the club in the 2019 to 2020 season alone.

Aside from Juventus, there are other famous clubs in Serie A. Topping the list are the FC Internazionale Milano, AC Milan, SSC Napoli, Cagliari Calcio, and Parma Calcio 1913.

These clubs have millions of fans rooting for their favorite football team to win the Coppa Italia trophy.

Because millions of fans worldwide support and enjoy watching Serie A, the game has opened a lot of sports betting opportunities.

Understanding How Serie A Odds Work

If you’re familiar with football odds, then learning how Serie A odds work is easy. But if you’re new to sports betting and wants to understand these odds at their most basic level, here is what betting on a Serie A match looks like:

Team/Outcome Decimal odds Fractional odds American odds
Juventus 1.67 4/6 -149
AC Millan 3.50 5/2 +250
Draw  3.75 11/4 +275

As you can see from the table, this is a match between Juventus and AC Millan. These two teams and Inter Milan have collected the most Serie A titles for the past years. Here, the odds are shown in decimal, fractional, and American odds.

If you use the moneyline betting type on US sportsbooks, the Serie A odds are often displayed with pluses and minuses. The plus sign indicates that the team is the underdog, while the minus sign means that they are the favorite.

In our illustration above, Juventus are the favorites. The decimal price of 1.67 becomes 4/6 when converted to fractional odds. For every $6 you bet, you get the chance to win $4.

Meanwhile, for every $2 you bet on AC Millan, you can win $5. This gives you a total return of $7 if AC Millan wins the match. Betting on a tie on this football match would give you $11 for every $4 bet.

The reassuring thing about the Serie A type of betting is that most sportsbooks, including SportsBetting.com, allow bettors to decide how they want to view the odds. So if you’re used to American odds, simply adjust the settings so you’ll be more comfortable before placing your bet.

Serie A Round-Robin

In a Serie A round-robin format, 20 teams play in the football season’s first half (andata). Each team plays against each opponent league for a total of 19 matches overall.

The participating teams include Inter Milan, Juventus, AC Milan, Atalanta, Napoli, Roma, Lazio, Sassuolo, Fiorentina, Bologna, Sampdoria, Verona (AC ChievoVerona), Udinese,  Benevento, Cagliari, Crotone, Genoa, Parma, Spezia, and Torino. Inter Milan, also called the Internazionale, is the only football club that participates in the Serie A every season.

In the second half (ritorno) of the season, the teams still play in the same order, but the home and away are switched.

Juve, AC Milan, and Inter Milan are always assigned the shortest odds in Serie A betting. That’s because the three clubs have a high chance of winning the championship.

If two or more Serie A teams are equal on points at the end of the season, the ordering will be based on their head-to-head records. This part of the season opens an interesting Serie A odds comparison, which may last throughout the season.

The top four Serie A teams qualify for the Champions Leagues. In contrast, the teams finishing fifth and sixth will be eligible for the Europa League.

The European cup of the Serie A league will go to the Coppa Italia winner.

Serie A Odds and Betting Types

There are several betting types to choose from when placing a Serie A bet. We’ve listed below some of the most popular types of Serie A bets for you to choose from.

Moneyline

Moneyline betting is a popular option when it comes to Italy Serie A bets. This type of bet requires you to simply pick a team you think will win in a particular matchup.

Let’s say Torino FC is playing against the ACF Fiorentina. You placed your stake on Torino FC, and they eventually won. This means that you also win your bet.

Most Serie A sports bettors prefer the moneyline option because it reduces the unpredictability that comes with spread betting and totals.

After all, odds are already expressed in money values, and the standard is $100. If the odds go with a minus (-) sign, it means that you need to stake that amount to earn $100.

For instance, if the betting line for Torino FC is -150, then you must bet $150 to earn $100.

If the odds display the plus (+) sign, then that’s the amount of money you can earn on a successful $100 bet.

For example, the line for ACF Fiorentina is +150. It means that you can potentially earn $150 on a $100 bet. Moneyline is also called American odds.

Assuming both sides have equal bets, the sportsbook will have a built-in 10% charge when you bet on the game, regardless of the outcome. This is the vigorish or “juice” (aka vig) for the sportsbook or the house.

In moneyline betting, you get back your stake plus winnings if your bet is successful.

When the betting line is +400, the figure indicates how much money ($400) can be won on a $100 bet.

Totals Over/Under (O/U)

Totals betting or over/under (O/U) is a bet in which the sportsbook predicts the game’s total score before the match begins. The bettor will just have to place an over or under bet based on the set total score.

For instance, a sportsbook sets the total points to be 4.5 before a match between Roma and ChievoVerona. You decide to bet on over, meaning you will win if five or more goals are scored in the game.

What if you bet that the final score will be under 4.5 points? Then, you will win if four goals or lower are scored in the game.

Futures

Futures bets are placed on a sports event that will happen in the future. Aside from Serie A, other popular futures options are the NBA finals and NFL Super Bowl.

Sports bettors can bet on which team will be included in the European Cup finals and which club will triumph in the Coppa Italia.

Another futures bet option you can try is whether AC Millan will be the champions for this year’s season or not. If the team does win, you also win your futures bet.

Although your money is tied up when you make a futures bet, this type of Serie A bet may result in large payouts in the long term.

Point Spread

When applied to Serie A odds, the point spread or equalizer refers to the handicap that is given to the stronger team. Sportsbooks recognize that all teams are not created equally, so they make a point spread instead.

A point spread gives bettors an opportunity of winning the game as it levels the field for both clubs. Let’s take a match between Inter Milan and Benevento.

Inter Milan’s betting line was set at -257. This means that they are the favorite.

On the other hand, Benevento is the underdog with a line of +725. A $20 bet on the underdog will give you a total payout of $165 if successful.

We were able to get $165 by using the formula for the total payout for a bet on the underdog (positive odds).

Payout = (your stake x odds / 100) + your stake

If you bet $20 on Inter Milan and the favorite wins, your total payout is $27.78.

To get the total payout for Inter Milan, we used this formula:

Payout = (your stake / odds x 100) + your stake

In a match between Juventus and Benevento, let’s say the sportsbook sets the spread at 2.5 goals (.5 points are used to avoid draws).

Team Point Spread
Juventus -2.5 (-105)
Benevento +2.5 (-117)

This means that Benevento (the underdog) should win the game outright or lose the match by 2 goals at most.

If you bet on Juventus, the team doesn’t just need to win. They need to win by 3 points or more.

The Serie A odds examples are in the American format, although you can convert them to the decimal format. Generally, decimal odds are more popular in Italy and Europe.

Decimal odds represent the potential return for every $1 bet. For instance, the sportsbook set the odds for Juventus to win the Serie A title at 2.75.

A betting line like this tells you that you have a potential gain of $2.75 for every $1 bet. The net already includes $1.75 winnings and $1 return of stake. The decimal odds of 2.75 translates to American odds of +175.

Prop bet

A proposition bet on Serie A sometimes looks like futures bets. The difference between the two types of betting is that the proposition bet involves stakes on a specific event, team, or individual players.

Prop bets also do not involve the outcome of the game.

Examples of prop bets include:

  • How many goals will Cristiano Ronaldo make in a match?
  • Will the team of Ciro Immobile score first?
  • How many field goals will the Hellas Verona FC kick?
  • Will Romelu Lukaku be the top scorer this season?

Answers to these questions are specific, which is what prop bets are about.

Prop bets are the lifeblood of many small bets in the football betting industry. Sportsbooks offer prop bets to retain and recruit bettors, but rarely as a means of profit.

To increase your probability of winning, read the rules of the sportsbook before placing your bet.

Serie A Betting Tips

Just like how the English Premier League (England), Bundesliga (Germany), and La Liga (Spain) attract a lot of attention among sports bettors, Serie A also has a great following.

Here are some Serie A betting rules to help you make informed bets and increase your chances of making money from sports betting.

We also included the details on how most sportsbooks work when setting football betting odds.

Calculating Serie A/Football Odds

Using data

Betting sites have a team that analyzes all information available on a particular match. These analyses comprise formulas and tools that provide these experts a comprehensive view of the probabilities.

Before sportsbooks display Serie A or football odds, they consider factors like the following:

  • injuries
  • The current state of the entire league or team
  • The current shape of the league members
  • Suspensions
  • Recent match results

Sportsbooks value this data during the odds calculation process. You should, too, if you want to increase your probability of winning.

You can also take advantage of the bet slip, where different markets are often displayed.

Creating cash estimates

Just as sportsbooks calculate the range of the stakes that will be placed in a match, you can also create a cash flow estimate as a way to manage your bankroll. As much as possible, separate your Serie A betting finances from your personal money.

Having cash estimates reduces the risk of making bad plays just to stop variance.

SportsBetting.com believes that practicing discipline when betting is one of the surest ways to be successful in the industry. That’s why we always encourage responsible gambling.

If you, a friend, or a family member has a gambling problem and needs help, we encourage you to call 1-800-GAMBLER.

Setting up a margin or juice

Now that bookies have the cash estimates and data, they will set up a margin to earn money. They may provide odds that are lower than what they are supposed to be.

For instance, instead of setting the odds at 2.00, bookies can set up the margin so that bettors will end up with 1.93 odds. This is how most bookies take a percentage of the odds in exchange for their services.

In general, choose a bookie that takes about a 3 to 5% margin so you can also receive a proportionate share of your winnings.

At SportsBetting.com, we know that sharp odds and high limits are important to you. That’s why we strive to give you our best odds and the most upper limits in the industry, so you have more chances of succeeding.

Popular Serie A Betting Markets

Serie A fans are not just from Italy. They also come from other countries like Brazil and Sweden. Here are some popular Serie A betting markets:

Anytime Goalscorer

An anytime goalscorer, sometimes referred to as an all-time goalscorer, is a famous Serie A betting market. This market has also increased in popularity in many sportsbooks because of the increasing number of sports stars within the league.

The premise of an anytime goalscorer bet is simple. Just bet on a player you think will score within 90 minutes plus injury time.

This means that your bet is valid as long as the player scores anytime within the game.

The odds for an all-time goalscorer bet tend to be shorter than the first or last goalscorer bets. Usually, you can spot value in defenders scoring for an all-time goalscorer bet.

Total Goals

Goals are what make football exciting. This is why Serie A’s over/under goals stay profitable even if the market is not easy to predict.

Odds will continue to increase for the bet on over as the number of goals increases. You will need to study both teams’ and their key players’ recent forms to balance this kind of bet.

Draw No Bet

Draw No Bet is a Serie A bet that eliminates the draw from selections. It assumes that a team will win. If a match ends without a winner, your bet will be returned.

This type of bet is valuable for a Serie A bettor who is not entirely convinced that a team will win. So, if you are not sure that an underdog can beat Juventus, but you still want to win a bet, then the draw no bet is an ideal option.

Serie A is a great league to bet on. From relegation battles to Serie B season to who will become the Coppa Italia winner, there are plenty of opportunities to have fun and make money through online sports betting.
