Early odds on the next BCS Champ

Only because there isn't already enough action and intensity in the air for gamblers at this time of year, online sportsbooks have decided it was time to release the College Football Future odds for which college team will walk away with the Bowl Championship Series title next January at the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena, California.

Betting football online is very popular, as is sports betting online in general. There are many betting options available for sports bettors at all times of the year, but right now, college betting has taken center stage, with all the March Madness picks, plus now the college football odds.

Let's look at the favorites for the college football odds for the Championship. As of right now, colleges at the top of the list include most of the usual suspects. Florida (7-2), winner of the 2009 BCS title, is the overall favorite while Oklahoma and USC (9-2) are deadlocked in the No. 2 spot at SPORTSBETTING.COM.

Oklahoma has had an eventful off-season since losing to the Gators in the final and without a doubt the Sooners will be well positioned to make another run at the title in 2010. The team received somewhat surprising news in early February when Sam Bradford, Jermaine Gresham and Trent Williams each announced plans to stay in school for at least one more season before making a shift to the pros. That news bodes well for a team that was just one step short of the ultimate prize and bettors have already taken note.

Home to what was considered one of the best defenses in entire country in 2008, USC will face a challenge this year to replace a linebacker corps that will likely shed three of its starters in the first round of this year's NFL draft.

Rey Maualuga, Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews were tackling machines that most opponents could simply not stop and while the Trojan program is gifted for its ability raise players up to their highest potential, replacing these players will be virtually impossible.

The Trojans will of course benefit once again from a relatively easy schedule against mediocre Pac 10 opponents, giving the replacements time to develop. That Draft Day hangover can really sting though and we haven't even mentioned Trojan QB Mark Sanchez. Sanchez will be throwing again in September but this year you can probably expect to see him doing so in a Detroit Lions uniform after being drafted first overall.

Rounding out the list of five college teams with future odds paying lower than 10-to-1 is Texas (6-1) and the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Longhorns will stay in the hunt this year despite the loss of top-rated defensive end Brian Orakpo. A pass-rush specialist, Orakpo dominated several of his opponents and can currently found near the top of almost every NFL team's mock draft board.

Ohio State could contend but with RB Chris "Beanie" Wells and both starting wideouts leaving the offense, strong recruiting will be the key to the Buckeyes' success. The team is also going to lose at least four of its starters on the defensive side of the ball and this line will likely be paying a better rate over the next few months.

NCAA Picks

What about looking for value in the programs currently highlighting the board on every bettors other favorite sport? The March Madness tournament, which is practically seen as a religious holiday for hoopsters, is favoring North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Memphis and the University of Connecticut as Final Four contenders.

Unfortunately, the Tar Heels football program only comes in at 75-to-1 in BCS betting and of the four schools, it's the favorite.

So for fans that can't get enough football the countdown is already on. In the meantime, fill out a few bracket drafts and enjoy the madness. It's tournament time!
