US OPEN COULD SEE A LONG SHOT TAKING THE WIN

Narrow fairways and a plush rough will greet the 2020 US Open golfers when they take to the course at Winged Foot Golf Club starting Sept. 17.

Will the course conditions find the winning score to be above par in Mamaroneck, New York? It wouldn’t be the first time. Brooks Koepka shot a +1 in 2018 at Shinnecock Hills. The scores this year could be even higher if the golfers who’ve been invited to play in the tournament don’t showcase some outstanding accuracy.

Gary Woodland, who was last year’s US Open winner, will be on hand with hopes of defending his title, but oddsmakers don’t see that being very likely and have given him 50-1 odds. Dustin Johnson, who was the FedEx Cup champion last year, is the current favorite at 8-1.

The 2020 US Open will have a solid field of talented golfers vying for the top spot as Jon Rahm (11-1), Rory McIlroy (12-1), Bryson DeChambeau (14-1) and Justin Thomas (14-1) have been picked as the favorites on the odds board.

Of those golfers, we think the one to avoid is likely McIlroy. He’s been struggling to be consistent in landing on the fairway off the tee and last season finished 155th in the PGA in driving accuracy at just 56.34 percent. Additionally, McIlroy has struggled since golf returned from the break in play due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He’s finished in the top 10 just once since then.

One golfer of interest to players should be Xander Schauffele, who currently stands at 18-1 odds to win the tournament. Schauffele has finished fifth, sixth and third in the last three years of the US Open. The 26-year-old just recently shot a -18 and tied for second place with Thomas in the Tour Championship in early September. Johnson finished first with -21 in that event.

What Schauffele brings to the US Open that adds to his potential is his accuracy and ability to get to the green without too much trouble. Players looking to place a bet on a long shot should consider Schauffele as an option.
