Miami Dolphins at Denver Broncos
Date: Sunday, Nov. 22 – 4:05 PM ET
Odds: Dolphins -3.5
For a few weeks, it looked like the Broncos were back on track. After an 0-3 start, Denver then won three of its next four games to move back into the Wild Card conversation, but back-to-back losses have the Broncos once again trending towards a disappointing season.
The Denver offense has never been particularly strong this season, but it had perhaps its worst performance of the season against the Raiders this weekend, headlined by the play of quarterback Drew Lock. Lock finished the day just 23 of 47 passing for 257 yards and one touchdown and threw a career-high four interceptions in the game. As bad as the passing attack was, the running game was not much better, managing just 66 yards on the ground.
Though the Broncos’ defense has been the strength of the team this season, ranking near the top of the league in forcing third-down stops and preventing red-zone touchdowns, Denver has struggled to slow down the opposition of late. The Broncos have surrendered 30 or more points in each of the last four games after holding opponents under 30 points in the first five.
Denver needs to be able to rely on that defense to keep games close and the offense to make just enough plays to win games. Over the past few weeks, however, the Broncos haven’t been able to rely on either.
This has been a rebound season for the Miami Dolphins. After a 5-11 finish last season, the Dolphins are 6-3 this season and unbeaten behind rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins are one of the hottest teams in the NFL just after the midpoint in the season. After an 0-2 start, Miami won six of its next seven games and is currently riding a five-game winning streak.
Miami’s success this season has been a result of balance between the offense and defense. The Dolphins are averaging just under 28 points per game on offense this season with three performances of 30 or more points, including a 43-point scoring barrage against the San Francisco 49ers. On the other side of the ball, the Miami defense is allowing just 20.2 points per game, holding teams under 20 points four times this season, including a shutout win over the New York Jets.
That balance between the offense and the defense has allowed the Dolphins to win games in a variety of different ways this season and makes them difficult to beat as an opponent has to outplay them on both sides of the ball.
Miami enters this game with the better team on both sides of the ball, more momentum and more to play for in the midst of a playoff push. Though Denver will have the advantage of playing at home in the high altitude, the Dolphins simply have the advantage in nearly every aspect of this game and should cruise to an easy victory.
Pick: Dolphins -4.5
