Von Miller has value odds to win first Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2020
Over his nine-year NFL career, Von Miller has essentially done it all.
Denver’s star outside linebacker has been selected to eight Pro Bowls, and he is a three-time First Team All Pro. He won Defensive Rookie of the Year when he entered the league in 2011, and Miller led the Broncos to glory in Super Bowl 50.
Miller was named the MVP of Super Bowl 50 for his dominant performance in that game, leaving the future Hall of Famer chasing just one more individual achievement. He has yet to be named Defensive Player of the Year despite being one of the elite defensive players of the last decade, and his 2020 odds to do so at SportsBetting.com are tantalizing.
Von Miller DPOY Betting Odds
Miller is not among the favorites to be named Defensive Player of the Year. Two-time winner Aaron Donald is the frontrunner, and 2019 Defensive Rookie of the Year, Nick Bosa, is right behind him. The Watt brothers are the next favorites following those two defensive linemen, and Miller is in a group of players not far behind that includes Joey Bosa, Myles Garrett and Derwin James.
For an outside linebacker to win Defensive Player of the Year, they must register a lot of sacks. Sacks are the most prevalent stat that voters look at when awarding this honor, and Miller has been one of the best pass rushers in the game during his time in the league. He has registered 106 sacks in his career, and he has finished with at least 10 sacks in seven of his nine seasons.
Miller won’t fill the stat sheet in other areas as offenses avoid his side of the field. He has only surpassed 70 tackles in a season once, and he has a total of two interceptions in his career. For Miller to win Defensive Player of the Year, he will likely need at least 15 sacks and three or four forced fumbles to highlight his ability to be a playmaker.
Broncos’ Supporting Cast
The Broncos were one of the top four defenses in the NFL for four straight seasons from 2014 to 2017. They have fallen off the last few years, but their additions this offseason should significantly improve this side of the ball and free up more room for Miller to make plays.
A healthy Bradley Chubb figures to make the biggest impact. Chubb missed 12 games last season after tearing his ACL in Week 4, and his return will take some of the pressure off Miller. As a rookie, he registered 12 sacks and 14 tackles for loss, and similar numbers would be massive.
Picking up defensive tackle Jurrell Casey and cornerback A.J. Bouye via trade will help this defense a lot too. Casey showed how overpowering he can be in the middle of the line during Tennessee’s run to the AFC Championship Game, and Bouye is one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL.
2020 Defensive Player of the Year Prediction
Miller has come close to winning Defensive Player of the Year in the past. He lost the 2016 Defensive Player of the Year to Khalil Mack by one vote, and he finished runner-up to J.J. Watt in 2012. The outside linebacker could be a sentimental pick to win the award if its close, as he has two near misses, and he is the most dominant defensive player in the game today that has yet to be named DPOY. Denver is set to have several games broadcast on national television, and strong performances in those games could give Miller the momentum he needs.
