Getting to Brough Park

Brough Park Greyhound Stadium is located at The Fossway, Byker, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England.

History of Brough Park

Brough Park Greyhound Stadium is in the east end of Newcastle, in the suburb of Byker. This part of the city has undergone constant change since its urbanization in 1865. Byker became famous for chemicals, high quality glass and pottery.

The Romans settled in Byker 2000 years ago, as evidenced by "The Fossway" and " Roman Avenue", two Roman roads fringed on Brough Park’s two sides. The Romans and the Ancient Brits may even have staged chariot races around Brough Park.

Centuries later the Vikings invaded the north of England. The Vikings gave the district its name "Byker". Byker got its name from "By Kiarr". “By” meaning a Viking village, "Kiarr" meaning near a marsh.

Brough Park was originally an open park land, then in 1910 a racetrack and grandstand was built to cater to horse racing. Since then Brough Park has witnessed many changes.

And on June 23, 1928, greyhound racing was introduced. Brough Park has been used for show jumping, stunt shows, and rugby leagues, but the stadium is currently best known for its greyhounds.
