The
Kid wasn't ready yet
-- Dear Mark,
My spouse and I have a dinner riding on your response.
Because we live in a very small town with limited
video rentals, we need an answer from you to the
following question. I say the Cincinnati Kid lost
his final wager in the movie of the same name. My
husband believes he won and became the reigning
poker player of New Orleans. Who is right? Lou J… more»
The
language of craps
-- Dear Mark,
I tried playing craps for the first time on a recent
trip to Las Vegas. I stuck with the bets you mention
on your tapes and actually walked away from the
crap table $200 ahead. And though I was up $200,
I still found the game intimidating. Mostly because
I couldn't understand what numbers the dealer was
calling. No wonder it scares so many players away.
So just what number is "Little Joe from Kokomo?"

The
Law of 250
-- Dear Mark,
I agree with you about judging casinos in your column
"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." I would
like to add the Soaring Eagle Casino of Mt. Pleasant,
MI to your ugly list. Besides employees being extremely
rude, they charge for drinks while you're playing
slots and their machines are the tightest I've ever
played. If they don't change their ways soon, they're
going to lose a lot of customers when the new casinos
in Detroit are built. You need to let your readers
know how bad it is. In the future I'm going elsewhere
to do my gaming. Rick J. Wixom, MI… more»
The
legacy of The Gambler
-- Dear Mark,
Were you surprised when the Navajo Indians recently
voted against casino gambling on their reservation?
I thought that every tribe wants casino gaming.
Why didn't the Navajos jump on the wagon train (pardon
the pun). Brady M… more»
The
side of gambling casinos never talk about
-- Dear Mark,
I am a graduate student working on my Masters degree
in Abnormal Psychology. My thesis is on Compulsive/Problem
Gamblers. Any information on the extent of the problem,
trends, profiles and treatment of problem gambling
would be greatly appreciated. Jane B… more»
Three's
a charm?
-- Dear Mark,
My favorite number is three. I was born on 3/3/1933.
I regularly bet three on the roulette table, make
$33 dollar wagers in blackjack and always play the
third machine from the left on a slot carousel.
Over the years it has paid decent dividends. Is
there such a thing as a lucky number? Freddy G… more»
Your
ticket to three squares a day
-- Dear Mark,
I know the following question I'm about to ask is
illegal, but I'm still interested.
A small factory close to my home discards a circular
coin-like metal that is exactly the same size and
weight as the silver dollar coins used in a casino.
If I were caught inserting the coins into a machine,
what would happen? Anonymous… more»
Treat
all winnings as YOUR hard-earned money
-- Dear Mark,
My friend believes I have a problem gambling with
money that I win. She says I treat it as "the
house's money" and continue to play till I
lose. Is she right? Norma B… more»
Viva
Las Vegas -- Before I Deal: I receive an abundance of
mail from individuals making their first pilgrimage
to Las Vegas asking me this or that about the gaming
Meca of the world. Not one to hold back expressing
my biased opinion, I will advise you that discounting
50% of my dogma would be appropriate. Two reasons
why. First, I don't reside there (I live in northern
Nevada but visit Las Vegas a dozen times a year)
and second, I'm a journalist. Properly forewarned,
here is a sampling of the many questions I get weekly… more»
