Well, that's a wrap for another NFL season (the Pro Bowl doesn't count). The Super Bowl betting was fast and furious for this year's big game.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals made it a second entertaining Super Bowl in a row and although XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes didn't make as exciting a catch as the New York Giants' David Tyree last year, he was clutch for the Steelers.

Super Bowl lines: The line opened with Pittsburgh at -6.5 and rose to -7 by around Tuesday, January 20, 2009 and pretty remained constant up until opening kickoff while the opposite was taking place in Las Vegas.

According to the Vegas Hilton sportsbook, the line opened with Pittsburgh listed as 7-point faves and dropped to -6.5. The Cardinals were seeing 90% of the action with Pittsburgh at -7 while the Steelers were did 60% at -6.5.

When all was said and done, the Pittsburgh Steelers triumphed to capture their sixth Super Bowl victory, failing to cover at -7 and going Over the Total of 46.5 in a 27-23 victory.

But the Super Bowl isn't considered one of the biggest betting events from line and Total betting alone.

Here are some tidbits of information for proposition bettors:

  • The Arizona Cardinals won the coin toss, but chose to defer to the second half and kicked off to Pittsburgh first.
  • The first score of the game came 9 minutes and 45 seconds into the first quarter when Pittsburgh Jeff Reed converted an 18-yard field goal although it looked like QB Ben Roethlisberger crashed into the endzone for a TD a few minutes earlier—instant replay reversed the call.
  • The first TD of Super Bowl XLIII came courtesy of little-used Pittsburgh RB Gary Russell who punched in the major in the second quarter.
  • Arizona's first score also came in the second quarter when TE Ben Patrick caught a 1-yard Kurt Warner pass.
  • The first half closed with a 100 yard interception return for a TD by Steelers LB James Harrison; it set a record for the longest play in Super Bowl history.
  • The score was 17-7 Pittsburgh going into halftime.
  • The Arizona Cardinals would outscore the Steelers 16-10 in the second half, including a safety when Pittsburgh C Justin Hartwig was flagged for holding in the endzone in the fourth quarter.
  • The two teams did their best Broad Street Bullies impression, combining for 18 penalties for 162 yards and punches were even thrown at one point.
  • Pittsburgh turned the ball over once (INT) and Arizona twice (INT and fumble).
  • Both teams failed to muster much of a ground game, instead opting to go through the air. Pittsburgh WR Hines Ward only had 2 catches for 43 yards while WR Santonio Holmes caught nine balls for 131 yards and 1 TD, enough for MVP honors.
  • Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald had seven receptions for 127 yards complemented with 2 TDs.
  • Both QBs had strong performances, Roethlisberger went 21 for 30 with 256 yards with 1 TD and 1 pick; Warner went 31 for 43 for 377 yards together with 3 TDs and an interception.
  • With the late-drive by Arizona, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin received a Gatorade shower with under 45 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

For those keeping track for next season, SPORTSBETTING.COM has the Cardinals listed at +3000 to take the Super Bowl next year while the Steelers are listed at +1000 to defend their title.

It's been a good season and an even better Super Bowl.

We hope you made money with your Super Bowl betting and all your NFL playoff picks and betting.
