Belmont Stakes Betting, Belmont Stakes Gambling, Bet On Horses

by Mike Gratton | May 25 2009

On June 6th, the 141st running of the Belmont Stakes takes place. The toughest test of the three legs of the Triple Crown, it's run every June at Belmont Park in Elmont New York.

It is capped at 16 horses and has proven to be a difficult race to handicap. The last race of the Triple Crown, bettors have had a chance to see most, if not all of the horses run in one of the previous races. But the amount of media hype around the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winners can often cloud the judgement for horse racing handicappers. This year it might be no different.

Rachel Alexandra will be getting most of the attention from fans and from the sports betting public as she prepares for the Belmont. As of today, there is still some uncertainty whether she will in fact run in the third leg of the Triple Crown or not. The filly has been looking good in workouts, but her owner, Jess Jackson, hasn't announced yet if she will run.

"We watched her work this morning," Jackson said. "She is progressing well, but we still can't make any decision on her next start."

Belmont Stakes Odds

The Preakness Stakes winner will, of course, be the favorite to win when the Belmont Stakes odds are posted up. The three-year old has now won the difficult Kentucky Oaks (by 20 ¼ lengths) and followed that up with her thrilling Preakness Stakes victory. However, the Preakness win was not an easy one, as she had to hold off a hard-charging Mine That Bird, the Kentucky Derby winner.

Mine That Bird will be the second favorite when the Belmont Stakes odds are released. With the extra distance in the Belmont, many top horse racing handicappers feel that Rachel Alexandra won't have the stamina to win this one.

There continues to be some intrigue around jockey Calvin Borel, who rode Mine That Bird to the Kentucky Derby win, then switched to Rachel Alexandra for the Preakness Stakes win. With no decision yet of Rachel Alexandra will run or not, Borel might decide to take another mount due to the delay. It's being reported that Robby Albarado, who rode Curlin, will ride Rachel Alexandra in the Belmont.

Online Gambling

Online gambling sites have been active with Triple Crown betting, as always. The sports betting public love to wager on these big races, both at the actual track and from their home computers. The online gambling peaked with the Kentucky Derby earlier this month and the interest continued for the bettors with the Preakness. However, reports from online sportsbooks was that the Kentucky Derby produced higher sports betting volume overall.

The Belmont likely won't reach the same level of betting activity as the Kentucky Derby, which is truly the granddaddy of the horse racing season, but it will attract millions of wagers.

Sports betting websites, such as SPORTSBETTING.COM, have been offering Belmont Stakes odds for a while. Check their odds for the most recent numbers on the Belmont Stakes.
