The World Golf Championships Accenture Match Play took place this past weekend and on the way to the championship match, Tiger Woods, who was back from injury, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Anthony Kim, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els all fell by the wayside leading to a Geoff Ogilvy-Paul Casey final.
Let's hope those top golfers have more staying power when the final round of The Masters tees off in April.
One of the biggest golf events of the year, this is also the biggest golfing event for sports betting as well.
The Masters tournament at Augusta National in Georgia not only promises a big purse to the winner but the prestigious green jacket as well.
Since the turn of the century, seven of the last nine green jacket winners have hailed from North America—Fijian Vijay Singh took it in 2000 and South African Trevor Immelman last year.
Let's have a look at the odds for The Masters and see what some good Masters picks might be.
Tiger Woods +225 Masters Odds
To no one's surprise, Tiger is the odds-on to take this year's green jacket but will he be 100 percent?
Prior to the Accenture Match Play, Woods last saw action in the 2008 U.S. Open.
Online sportsbooks cringed when the sports betting public loaded up on Tiger Woods, as always, and he came through for them. On a severely damaged left ACL, Tiger managed to claim the U.S. Open title by defeating Rocco Mediate in sudden death and then was out of action until this past weekend where he was knocked out by Tim Clark in the second round.
No stranger to winning at Augusta National, Woods owns four green jackets with wins in 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005 and finished the runner-up at last year's event. Tiger Woods odds for the Masters are always high, as he is the best gofer in the world with a history of winning this one.
Is he 100 percent healed and will he be firing on all cylinders come April? Watch to see how he plays between now and then.
Phil Mickelson +1000 Masters Odds
A two-time Masters champion and amongst the best golfers next to Tiger, "Lefty" would like to add to his collection of green jackets.
At last year's event, Mickelson finished fifth at -2, six strokes behind the lead and at the Accenture Match Play, he was KO'd in the third round by Stewart Cink.
"Lefty" has been known to make some major gaffes though. At the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, New York, he blew a one-stroke lead on the final hole when he chose to use his driver, leading to a comedy of golf errors. Geoff Ogilvy won and afterwards, Mickelson referred to himself as an idiot.
Let's hope "Lefty" doesn't make any poor decisions in Augusta, Georgia between April 9-12, 2009.
Trevor Immelman +6000
Trevor Immelman is listed as a longshot to repeat as Masters champion and he really doesn't have a good history at majors besides last year's win.
The golfer from Cape Town, South Africa finished 65th at the 2008 U.S. Open and 19th at the 2008 British Open—although he made the cut in the three majors he played last year.
2009 has been lacking luster as well as Immelman has only played in two events, as of February 28, finishing 21st and earning $71,000 at the Mercedes Benz Championship in January and missing the cut at the Northern Trust Open two weeks ago.
Maybe Immelman will recapture some magic at Augusta National in April.
Anthony Kim +2000
If another player from North America is to take the Masters this year, what about youngster Anthony Kim?
Kim was instrumental in the United States' win at the Ryder Cup last September and has shown some promise ever since turning pro in 2006.
Besides the Ryder Cup victory, Kim took first place at the AT&T National and the Wachovia Championships last year, finished second at the Verizon Heritage and had nine Top 10 finishes in all.
He took part in three majors last year, finishing 26th at the U.S. Open, 55th at the PGA Championship and seventh at the British Open.
Augusta National would be a fine place for Kim to take his first major.
Masters betting has started, as sports bettors are handicapping the field after each event building up to the first Major of the year.
